Hip Hop microphone

Hip Hop microphone

Your friend or loved one probably doesn’t need a hip hop microphone. Fortunately, when you buy this card, their microphone is given to a community centre that empowers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth to learn and become passionate about their music. It’s education by stealth and one of Oxfam’s most successful programs.

How does this gift help?

The Indigital Centre helps at-risk Indigenous youth reconnect with the wider community by giving them opportunities to tell their stories through music, art, dance and digital storytelling. Developed in response to the high suicide rate amongst young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, Indigital workshops help individuals to develop and record original pieces of music, video and art, promote themselves and their art through the Indigital website, and build confidence to seek further employment, education and gigs. It also empowers them with knowledge and skills, which they can take back to their respective communities and peers.

“We work with disengaged youth, Indigenous kids on the fringes. We use music as an outlet to explore personal issues because we understand the potential it has for healing. The participants work with their idols in the community – past participants who are now mentors to younger generations. Our programs increase cultural knowledge and pride. This gives them inspiration to go forward, to make a go of it.” Gary Saunders, 28, Indigital Coordinator, Victoria.
