Most people get socks as gifts. Not many get canoes. Which is surprising because canoes are so practical. Especially in the Pacific, where they are used to quickly get supplies to people after a natural disaster. This canoe will make sure everyone stays safe and that communities can begin rebuilding their lives.
These motorised canoes are used in Oxfam’s work in the Pacific, transporting staff to outlying islands. And they’re often the only means of transport. Our boatmen are highly trained and safety-conscious. So when disasters like floods strike, we have a well-prepared team ready to respond. These five and a half metre fibreglass canoes are an indispensable tool for our work in the Pacific. They get us and supplies to the remotest islands.
“After cyclones and wave surges, which are becoming more common in the Pacific, our boats allow us to do quick assessments of affected areas and see what the immediate needs are of affected populations.” Graham Kenna, Emergencies Logistics Coordinator, Oxfam Australia.
