Fishing net

Fishing net

Send someone you love this fishing net, even if they hate fishing. Why? Because this fishing net will allow the Katkari tribe in India to earn a living and help put their kids through school. Not many gifts can do that. Not even underpants.

How does this gift help?

The Katkari tribal community is one of several indigenous groups inhabiting the western mountains of Maharashtra in India’s north-west. The Katkari are an indigenous tribe who have traditionally been dependent on natural resources, making their living through freshwater fishing. The income earned from selling fish has reduced the need for tribal men to migrate in search of work and reduced their dependency on money lenders. The net can be used for several years and can be repaired by the fishermen themselves without too much investment.

“On average, I am selling three kilograms of fish each day in the market, where previously I had no job, no income. I am spending some of that money on my family’s food, and the rest I am saving for the education and future of my two children.” Anita Ankush, Pithan village, India.
