Wan Smol Bag (One Small Bag) runs youth centres in Vanuatu’s two main towns, Port Vila and Luganville, and also on the island of Pentecost. All three youth centres offer informal classes, workshops, and activities such as guitar playing, hip hop dance, nutrition, sewing, agriculture and futsal. These centres were started in answer to a desperate and growing need among unemployed youth who had finished school and had nothing to do. So for them, this card means less thumb-twiddling, and more strumming.

“Wan Smol Bag has definitely changed the local community here. If it wasn’t here then young people would probably be much more involved in drugs and alcohol use. The community would face difficulties in managing young people who have nothing to do with their time, and this would result in crime. I don’t think that there would be a great future for many young people if they didn’t come here. At Wan Smol Bag they learn skills that they can’t learn anywhere else.” Jerry Brown, 21, Vanuatu.
