The people we support want to work their way out of poverty; they want a hand up not a hand out. For many people agriculture is their primary source of food and income. We work with people in developing countries to determine what they need. Often it is training; sometimes it is the resources to kick start a project.
Here are some three of the types of projects we fund to help people earn a living.
In Sri Lanka, Oxfam Australia works with partner organisations to help disadvantaged men and women. By providing them with the means to take out a small loan, they are able to start a small business ventures that enable them to support their families and themselves. Many of the people we work with are struggling to rebuild their lives after the devastation of the tsunami and a 20 year civil war.
Oxfam also works with the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust in South Africa. With Hillcrest we are teaching women affected by HIV and AIDS skills such as sewing and beading so that they can earn an income and continue to lead dignified lives.
